this easter sees an eclectic exhibition of contemporary furniture exploring the concept of what we see as precious, presented by 5 leading designer makers from the southwest.

in their 2nd love factor exhibition, paul anderson, sam walsh, christian o’reilly and glenn rushbrooke + samantha robb (pachadesign) will be showcasing new work over the 4 days at renowned ceramicist sandy brown’s glove factory in appledore, north devon.

sammy of pachadesign explains: “to us, precious is about how much we love & cherish something.  it’s about its meaning to us, not simply its monetary value.  what we make, why we make it, how we make it, the materials we use, the lifestyle we have chosen as designer makers: it’s all incredibly precious to us”. 

as well as giving an in-depth view into the meanings & processes behind their work, the makers will also highlight what is precious to each of them.

the exhibition runs from 22nd – 25th april at the old glove factory, newquay street, appledore, north devon, ex39 1lu.  entry is free.

Following the success of their 1st collective exhibition, the 5 makers are planning a sequel for Spring 2011, again in the beautiful setting of the Glove Factory.

Their collective exhibition this weekend at The Appledore Visual Arts Festival includes a piece by each maker – more of their work can be seen on their own websites and also at their individual stands at The Contemporary Craft Fair at Bovey Tracey next weekend (11th – 13th June) – more details to follow soon.

“love factor“

New work from five contemporary furniture makers interspersed with lusty ceramic sculptures and paintings.

Sandy Brown’s Glove Factory Gallery in Appledore on the North Devon coast is the cavernous yet fertile setting this Easter for a tantalising new exhibition: for four days in April, “love factor” showcases fresh work from a group of contemporary furniture makers – Paul Anderson, Sam Walsh, Glenn Rushbrooke and Samantha Robb of pachadesign, and Christian O’Reilly – who all share a passion for their materials and for the alchemical nature of the creative process, and who have carved out ambitious, distinctive practices well off the beaten track.

A key figure of the European ceramics scene, Sandy is famous for the spontaneous and provocatively direct way she uses clay and colour. Her bold functional pieces and lusty sculptures will be on show unexpectedly juxtaposed with furniture.

At the heart of Sam Walsh’s practice lies a desire to push back the boundaries of design, and among other works he’ll be showing a drawer chest made from oak and bog oak designed specifically to express something of the essential spirit of the Penwith Peninsula.

Christian O’Reilly has drawn on years of design experience to create beautiful furniture with clean, elegant lines and crisp, unfussy detailing.

pachadesign’s understated, compelling one-offs are enlivened by an acute environmental responsibility as well as the rawness of oak, slate, and steel sourced from local quarries and salvage yards.

Relic oak from defunct gates, roofs, and boats has been Paul Anderson’s inspiration for over twenty years, and his earthy, elemental pieces typically include marks of former use alongside seductively weathered surfaces.

For the easily beguiled, a visit to this exceptional Spring exhibitionmight represent the first step in purchasing or commissioning a special piece from an original maker, or simply the opportunity to gain insights into the fascinating processes involved in turning inert raw materials into animate functional objects; the makers themselves plan to be present throughout to explain their particular, magical ways of working with wood and other materials.

 “love factor” runs for four days only, from April 10 – 13 and

will be open daily from 10.30am to 4pm.
